Getting myself out of the door was excruciating, let alone at breakneck speed when my attention was focused solely on the events playing out across the city, but I was ready at the door when Corbin pulled up. I recognized the long, black vehicle, which was shadowed by two identical cars. Corbin slipped out of the back seat, nodding as I staggered past him and climbed inside.

“Are you okay, sir?” His expression was concerned as he got back in the car and closed the door.

“Not especially,” I snarled, glancing around. I recognized Barnet beside me and of course, my driver, Cole, though I didn’t know the guy in the front seat. “Do you have guns?”

“Yes, sir,” Corbin smiled. “Plenty of guns.”

“I assume we’re heading to The Syndicate building, sir?”

I met Cole’s gaze in the rear-view mirror. “Yes.”

“And then what?” The guy I didn’t recognize spun in his seat. “What’s the plan then?”

“Who the fuck are you?”

“This is Carey, sir,” Corbin explained.

“Carey?” My attention slid from Corbin to the new guy. “How long have I been employing you, Carey?”

“A couple of weeks, Mr. Hyland,” he replied, suddenly less sure of himself.

“First, if you want to make it to a month, zip it.” I dismissed the shooting pain in my side as I rebuked him. My injuries would have to wait.

“Yes, sir. Sorry.”

“Second, don’t ever question me again.”

Carey nodded, his face ashen.

“I need to fill you in on what’s happened.” I glanced at Corbin.

“It looks like you’ve taken one hell of a beating, sir.” Corbin’s brow creased.

“Right.” Blowing out a breath, I tried to push away my concerns for Hilary and recounted the shit show that had been the last twelve hours.

“Fuck,” Barnet sighed. “So, Morrison had the balls to move on you, but your woman broke you out?”

“That’s right.”

“The same woman you led gagged down the aisle?” He grinned, and I chuckled despite my growing unease.

“Right again, but watch your tone. That woman is now my wife.”

“Got it, sir. I’m sorry.” Barnet’s brow rose. “I didn’t realize she had it in her.”

“There’s a lot more to her than meets the eye.” That was certainly one way of putting it and might explain why I had woken up to find her ensconced in my bitter rival’s building, but I still didn’t know the details.

“I suggest we get there, find somewhere local to park and wait.” I hated to say it, loathed everything about the plan, but I was also a realist, and Corbin was right. Whoever had thrown themselves to their death had created quite the story. The Syndicate would be crawling with cops and reporters for hours. I had no choice but to bide my time.

“How long, sir?”

“Until it’s dark.” I wasn’t sure which of them had asked, my focus solely on the crawling traffic ahead and Hilary’s fate. “The initial investigation will be complete by then, and they’ll have peeled whatever’s left of Morrison from the street.”

“But that means hours of sitting around doing nothing!” Carey threw his hands into the air, his exasperation assuaged by one of my withering looks.
